Passage One

Artificial flowers are used for scientific as well as for decorative purposes. They are made from a variety of materials, such as wax and glass, so skillfully that they can scarcely be distinguished from natural flowers. In making such models, painstaking skill and artistry are called for, as well as thorough knowledge of plant structure. The collection of glass flowers in the Botanical Museum of Harvard University is the most famous in North America and is widely known throughout the scientific world. In all, there are several thousand models in colored glass, the work of two artists-naturalists, Leopold Blaschka and his son Rudolph.

The intention was to have the collection represent at least one member of each flower family native to the United States. Although it was never completed, it contains more than seven hundred species representing 164 families of flowering plants, a group of fruits showing the effect of fungus diseases, and thousands of flower parts and magnified details. Every detail of these is accurately reproduced in color and structure. The models ate kept in locked cases, as they are too valuable and fragile for classroom use.

31. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

A. An Extensive Collection of Glass Flowers.

B. The Live Leopold and Rudolph Blaschka.

C. Flowers Native to the United States.

D. Materials Used for Artificial Flowers.

Some believe that it is the rise of popular culture including the media, sport and the fashion industry to blame. It is definitely true that this has somewhat brought about some shallow and egoistic people. However, we absolutely should not attribute this to the popular culture itself. Popular culture, opposite to exquisite culture, is easy to appreciate and comprehend and is oriented to the common people. Being popular does not mean emphasizing the appearance. The reason why they mislead some people is that they have developed a false concept in their mind. They believe anything popular must be presentational and only related to outer appearance. Whether the influence of popular culture is positive or negative depends on how people perceive and treat them. Properly used, they can instruct and entertain the public; on the contrary, they can also produce a generation of skin-deep people.解析:暂无解析

The Mayor promised that it would not happen again. Pessimists (悲观主义者) were certain that it would happen again within five years. In July 1977, there was a repeat performance which produced a serious disorder throughout the city. At that time the city was in one of its worst heat waves. In 1965, there was little crime during the darkness, and fewer than a hundred people were arrested. In 1977, hundreds of stores were broken into and looted (劫掠). Nearly 4,000 people were arrested but far more disappeared into the darkness of the night. The number of policeman available was far from enough and some looters even carry guns.Hospitals had to treat hundreds of people cut by glass from shop windows. Banks and most business remained closed the next day. The blackout started at 9:30 P.M., when lightning hit and knocked out supply cables. Many stores were thus caught by surprise. For twenty-four hours, New York realized how helpless it was without electricity.31. According to the first paragraph, who were right: the authorities or the pessimists?A. The authorities.B.
