No one knows exactly how many disabled people there are in the world, but estimates suggest the figure is over 450 million. The number of disabled people in India alone is probably more than double the total population of Canada.
In the United Kingdom, about one in ten people have some disability. Disability is not just something that happens to other people. As we get older, many of us will become less mobile, hard of hearing or have failing eyesight.
Disablement can take many forms and happen at any time of life. Some people are born with disabilities. Many others become disabled as they get older. There are many progressive disabling diseases. The longer time goes on,the worse they become. Some people are disabled in accidents. Many others may have disability in the form of a mental illness. All are affected by people's attitude towards them.
Disabled people face many physical barriers.Next time you go shopping or to work or visit friends, imagine what would you do if you could not get up steps,or on to buses and trains? What would you do if you could not see where you were going or could not hear the traffic? But there are other barriers:prejudice(偏见)can be even harder to break down and ignorance represents by far the greatest barrier of all.It is almost impossible for the able-bodied to fully understand what the disabled go through,so it is important to draw attention to these barriers and show that it is the individual person and their ability, not their disability, which counts.

The key word in Paragraph 4 is__________.
A:barriers
B:disabled
C:disability
D:prejudice

答案:A
No one knows exactly how many disabled people there are in the world , but estimates suggest the figure is over 450 million.”说明残疾人数量很多。
第四段第一句和第四句是该段主题句。" Disabled people face many physical barriers."',But there are other barriers:prejudice can be even harder to break down and ignorance represents by far the greatest barrier of all.”
文章最后一句:"...it is the individual person and their ability, not their disa-bility ,which counts.”大意是“······真正重要的是残疾人的独立人格及其能力,而不是其身体上的残疾。”
选项A、C都出现在第二段中。B是文章所呼吁的。文章最后一段说 "prejudice(偏见)can be even harder to break down and ignorance represents by far the greatest barrier of all"。

Besides climate change, developing countries like China need to deal with energy【21】and environmental issues: the development of sources of clean energy needs to be【22】line with their interests. Clean energy has been given greater prominence than ever before; it is seen as a new industrial【23】and【24】of economic growth for the new century. The time for clean energy has come.

In China, clean energy is moving ahead at full speed. Take wind power as an example: by the end of last year, China had【25】wind power generating capacity of 12. 21GW, making China the largest wind power generator in Asia and fourth in the world. But according to the research, one-third of wind power capacity is running【26】due to an inability to get the power to the national【27】.

India-like China—relies【28】on coal for its energy needs. This will only change if the funds and technology to develop clean energy, such as wind and nuclear power, are【29】. India will not choose clean energy【30】. Nuclear power is currently the most【31】of clean energy sources.【32】, if it is to be【33】on a large scale by developing nations, technological advances will be needed to make it competitive with coal.

Compared【34】developed countries, developing countries have more【35】choices when it comes to energy structure. Promoting economic growth requires【36】energy—and coal, the cheapest and most【37】source of energy for many countries—is the【38】choice. Cheap coal means cheap electricity and a competitive economy. Rising electricity prices would cause public【39】and impact on standards of【40】.

Today, people all over the world are moving out of small villages in the country to go and live in big, noisy cities. They are moving from the peaceful hills, mountains, fields, rivers and streams of the countryside to the busy world of streets, buildings, traffic and crowds. This movement from rural areas to urban areas has been going on for over two hundred years.
In many countries, the main reason why people come to live in towns and cities is work. After one or two large factories have been built in or near a town, people come to find work, and soon an industrial area begins to grow. There is usually a residential area nearby, where the factory workers can live. The families of these workers need schools, hospitals and shops, so more people come to live in the area to provide these services and a city grows.
In every major city in the world, there is a business district where the big companies have their main offices. In the United States, this area is usually in the city centre. It is here that you can see the huge skyscraper office blocks. The people who work here often travel a long way to work each day. Many of them live in the suburbs of the city, far away from the industrial area and the city centre. Some suburbs are very pleasant, with nice houses and big gardens. There are usually parks for children to play in and large department stores where you can buy all you need.
But what is the future of the big cities? Will they continue to get bigger? Perhaps not. Some major cities have actually become smaller in the last ten years, and it is quite possible that one day we will see people moving out of the major cities and back into smaller towns and villages.
In a residential area, you can see ____________.

A.rows of houses, schools and shops
B.many offices and factories
C.a lot of factories and farms
D.many houses with offices and factories

答案:A

Passage Three

No one knows exactly how many disabled (残废的) people there are in the world, but estimates suggest the figure is over 450 million. The number of disabled people in India alone is probably more than double the total population of Canada.

In the United Kingdom, about one in ten people have some disability. Disability is not just something that happens to other people. As we get older, many of us will become less mobile (可动的), hard of hearing or have failing eyesight.

Disablement can take many forms and occur at any time of life. Some people are born with disabilities. Many others become disabled as they get older. There are many progressive disabling diseases. The longer time goes on, the worse they become. Some people are disabled in accidents. Many others may have a period of disability in the form. of a mental illness. All are affected by people's attitude towards them.

Disabled people face many physical barriers. Next time you go shopping or to work or visit friends, imagine how you would manage if you could not get up steps, or on to buses and trains. How would you cope if you could not see where you were going or could not hear the traffic? But there are other barriers: prejudice can be even harder to break down and ignorance inevitably represents by far the greatest barrier of all. It is almost impossible for the able-bodied to fully appreciate what the severely disabled go through, so it is important to draw attention to these barriers and show that it is the individual person and their ability, not their disability, which counts.

There are different ways in which people try to deal with the problem of energy. One way is the greater production of common energy sources, such as coal, oil and gas. The trouble with these sources, however, is that they are not renewable.

Another way is energy conservation ( 节能 ), which means using energy more efficiently ( 有效地 ). In some very cold countries people build special houses to save energy. They place materials between the inside and the outside of the walls of the house to keep the cold out and the warmth in. The house is heated by the lights, the body heat of the people and the other equipment in it.

Finally, renewable energy sources are used even though they are often expensive to develop. One form. of these is geothermal energy. In certain parts of the world the temperature of the earth increases thirty degrees centigrade with each kilometer down. At six kilometers, therefore, it rises to nearly two hundred degrees. To get the heat, water is pumped ( 压;抽 ) down into the rocks and back up to the surface. Heat from the earth is already used in certain countries.

A、show the excellent skills of the builders

B、serve as an example of energy conservation

C、are heated by different sources of energy

D、are warmer than other types of houses

4、The underlined words "geothermal energy" in the third paragraph mean ( ).

A、renewable source

B、 underground source

C、 heat inside the earth

D、 temperature of the earth
