Sunday is more like Monday than it used to be, Places of business that used to keep daytime “business hours” are now open late into the night. And on the Internet, the hour of the day and the day of the week have become irrelevant (不相关的).A half century ago in the United States, most people experienced strong and precise dividing lines between days of rest and days of work, school time and summer time. Today the boundaries still exist, but they seem not clear.

The law in almost all states used to require stores to close on Sunday; in most, it no longer does, It used to keep the schools open in all seasons except summer, in most, it still does. And whether the work week should strengthen its legal limits, or whether it should become more “flexible,” is often debated. How should we, as a society, organize our time? Should we go even further in relaxing the boundaries of time until we live in a world in which every minute is much like every other?

These are not easy questions even to ask. Part of the difficulty is that we rarely recognize the “law of time” even when we meet it face to face. We know as children that we have to attend school a certain number of hours, a certain number of days, a certain number of years – but unless we meet the truant officer (学监) ,we may well think that we should go to school due to social custom and parents’ demand rather than to the law. As adults we are familiar with “extra pay for overtime working,” but less familiar with the fact that what constitutes(构成) “overtime” is a matter of legal definition. When we turn the clock forward to start daylight – saving time, have we ever thought to ourselves: “Here is the law in action”? As we shall see, there is a lot of law that has great influence on how organize and use time: compulsory education law, overtime law, and daylight – saving law- as well as law about Sunday closing, holidays, being late to work, time zones, and so on. Once we begin to look for it, we will have no trouble finding a law of time to examine and assess.

67. By saying” Sunday is more like Monday than it used to be,” the writer means that __________.

A. work time is equal to rest time

B. many people have a day off on Monday,

C. it is hard for people to decide when to rest

D. the line between work time and rest time is unclear

Judging from the drastic experiment of Frederickin the thirteenth century, it may be. Hoping todiscover what language a child would speak if he heard no mother tongue, he told the nurses to keep silent. All the infants died before the first year. But clearly there was more than lack of language here. What wasmissing was good mothering. Without good mothering, in the first year of life especially, the capacity to survive isseriously affected.Today no such severe lack exists as that ordered by Frederick. Nevertheless, some children are still backward全国硕士研究生入学考试英语(二)真题第 1 页,共 5 页2in speaking. Most often the reason for this is that the mother is insensitive to the signals of the infant, whose brainis programmed to learn language rapidly. If these sensitive periods are neglected, the ideal time for acquiring skillspasses and they might never be learned so easily again. A bird learns to sing and to fly rapidly at the right time, butthe process is slow and hard once the critical stage has passed.Experts suggest that speech stages are reached in a fixed sequence and at a constant age, but there are caseswhere speech has started late in a child who eventually turns out to be of high IQ. At twelve weeks a baby smilesand makes vowel-like sounds; at twelve months he can speak simple words and understand simple commands; ateighteen months he has a vocabulary of three to fifty words. At three he knows about l, 000 words which he can putinto sentences, and at four his language differs from that of his parents in style rather than grammar.Recent evidence suggests that an infant is born with the capacity to speak. What is special about mans brain, compared with that of the monkey, is the complex system which enables a child to connect the sight and feel of, say,a toy-bear with the sound pattern “toy-bear”. And even more incredible is the young brains ability to pick out anorder in language from the mixture of sound around him, to analyze, to combine and recombine the parts of alanguage in new ways. But speech has to be induced, and this depends on interaction between the mother and the child , where themother recognizes the signals in the child s babbling ( 咿呀学语) , grasping and smiling, and responds to them.Insensitivity of the mother to these signals dulls the interaction because the child gets discouraged and sends outonly the obvious signals. Sensitivity to the childs non-verbal signals is essential to the growth and d、evelopment oflanguage.16. Passage Three

Education is not an end, but a means to an end. In other words, we do not educate children only for the purpose of educating them; our purpose is to prepare them for life. As soon as we realize this fact, we will understand that it is very important to choose a system of education which will really prepare children for life. It is not enough just to choose the first system of education one finds, or to continue with one's old system of education without examining it to see whether it is in fact suitable or not.

In many modern countries, it has for some time been fashionable to think that by free education for all—whether rich or poor, clever or stupid—one can solve all the problems of society and build a perfect nation. But we can already see that free education for all is not enough; we find in such countries a far larger number of people with university degrees than there are jobs for them to fill. Because of their degrees, they refuse to do what they consider "low" work; and, in fact, work with the hands is thought to be dirty and shameful in such countries.

But we have only to think a moment to understand that the work of a completely uneducated farmer is far more important than that of a professor. We can live without education, but we will die if we have no food. If no one cleaned our streets and took the rubbish away from our houses, we would have terrible diseases in our towns. In countries where there are no servants because everyone is ashamed to do such work, scientists have to waste much of their time doing housework.

In fact, when we say that all of us must be educated to prepare for life, it means that we must be educated in such a way that, firstly, each of us can do whatever job is suited to his brain and ability, and secondly, we can realize that all jobs are necessary to society, and it is very bad to be ashamed of one's work, or to scorn someone else's. Only such a type of education can be called valuable to society.

44. Education is______.

A. a purpose

B. a means

C. fashionable

D. the first system

正确答案:B
44.答案为B  此题为细节题。本文主要探讨教育问题。第一句就是主题句,给出了教育的定义。所以答案在第一段的第一句:Education is not an endbut a means to an end

Passage Two

When we see well, we do not think about our eyes very often. It is only when we cannot see perfectly that we realize how important our eyes are.

People who are nearsighted can only see things that are very close to their eyes. Everything else is not so clear. Many people who do a lot of close work, such as writing, reading and sewing, become near sighted. Then they have to wear glasses in order to see distant (远处的) things clearly'.

People who are nearsighted suffer from just the opposite problem. They can see things that are far away, but they have difficulty in reading a book unless they hold it at arm's length. If they want to do much reading, they must get glasses, too.

Other people do not see clearly because their eyes are not exactly the right shape. They have what is called astigmatism (散光). This, too, can be corrected by glasses. Some people's eyes become cloudy because of cataracts (白内障). Long ago these people often became blind. Now, however, it is possible to operate on the cataracts and remove them.

Having two good eyes is important for judging distances. Each eye sees things from a slightly different angle (角度). To prove this to yourself, look at an object out of one eye; then look at the same object out

of the other eye. You will find the object's relation to the background (背景) and other things around it has changed. The difference between these two different eye views helps us to judge how far away an object is. People who have only one eye cannot judge distance as people with two eyes.

40. We should take good care of our eyes ______.

A. only when we cannot see perfectly

B. only when we can see well

C. even if we can see well

D. only when we realize how important our eyes are

正确答案:C

考题 We have to get that car fixed ().Ano matter it costs how muchBno matter how much costs itCno matter how much it costsDno matter how much does it costC[解析] 句意:我们要找人修好这辆车,不管花多少钱。状语从句。根据选项可知空处为一个让步状语从句,应用no matter how (=however)引导,其语序为“no matter how+adj./adv.+主语+谓语”,故应选C。

考题 Passage ThreeNo one knows exactly how many disabled (残废的) people there are in the world, but estimates suggest the figure is over 450 million. The number of disabled people in India alone is probably more than double the total population of Canada. In the United Kingdom, about one in ten people have some disability. Disability is not just something that happens to other people. As we get older, many of us will become less mobile (可动的), hard of hearing or have failing eyesight.Disablement can take many forms and occur at any time of life. Some people are born with disabilities. Many others become disabled as they get older. There are many progressive disabling diseases. The longer time goes on, the worse they become. Some people are disabled in accidents. Many others may have a period of disability in the form. of a mental illness. All are affected by people's attitude towards them.Disabled people face many physical barriers. Next time you go shopping or to work or visit friends, imagine how you would manage if you could not get up steps, or on to buses and trains. How would you cope if you could not see where you were going or could not hear the traffic? But there are other barriers: prejudice can be even harder to break down and ignorance inevitably represents by far the greatest barrier of all. It is almost impossible for the able-bodied to fully appreciate what the severely disabled go through, so it is important to draw attention to these barriers and show that it is the individual person and their ability, not their disability, which counts.41. The first paragraph points out that ______.A. it is possible to get an exact figure of the world's disabled peopleB. there are many disabled people in the worldC. the number of disabled people in India is the greatestD. India has not much more disabled people than Canada正确答案:B41.答案为B。根据第一段中心思想,得出该项选择。选项A、C和D与原文不符。
