A Helpless Father

The picture ironically shows that a pitiable old man in rags is being helplessly kicked off by his three sons and a daughter, who all wear decent clothes. The father’s negligent children are all guarding their home gates lest their old father “roll into” their households. In other words, they four ignore their moral sense of assuming the responsibility for their old father even though they may be all living a satisfying life. That is a painful scene we often encounter in our daily life.

Sad to say, the moral decline of the younger generations may be a rather explosive situation in our modern society. People definitely have their living conditions improved by wider and wider margins, as evidenced by the four children’s decent dressing, but their moral sense still remains sadly unchanged or in some cases becomes dramatically downgrading. Most people might have become too much self-centered, and even worse, they discard the tradition of giving respect to the elderly. They no longer care for their elders, let alone their neighbors or the disadvantaged; instead they try every means to avoid responsibility for other citizens. When one cares for others, one might even appear stupid or may even be distrusted.

Therefore, we have to take some useful measures to avoid the scene that is mentioned above. We must launch a variety of campaigns about the return to the good tradition of giving help and love the elderly. Moreover, we must appeal to our government to establish some relevant laws to punish those who avoid their duties. The last but not the least, our respect for age is an indication of the progress of human society, as imperatives of traditions require. We sincerely wish that the old man could be welcome to any of the four households, elegantly dressed, and a smile on the face.

Now more people are buying lottery tickets. Study the following charts carefully and write an article on the topic of lottery. In your article, you should cover the following points: 1) describe the phenomenon; 2) analyze the phenomenon, and give your comments on it. You should write about 200 words neatly on ANSWER SHEET 2. Nowadays, more and more people, especially in big cities, become interested in buying lottery tickets. According to chart 1, averagely 70 percent of those polled in the survey, held in three big cities, claimed to have dreamed of winning the big prize of five-million yuan. 85 percent of those polled in Guangzhou had had such a dream, compared with 65 percent and 60 percent, respectively, in Beijing and Shanghai.

The attraction of buying lottery tickets is obvious. The winner can get the biggest profit for the future with only a small investment. It realizes the beautiful dream of every participant-to be richer and to improve living standards. As is shown in Chart 2, should they win a big lottery, 81.3% of people would buy a new house, 61.9% would buy a car, and 61.7% would save the money for the education of themselves or their kids. And a great proportion of people say they would put the money in the bank or use it for investment or touring. Despite all the attractions brought by the lottery buying, it has also come under criticism. Some regard it as a kind of gambling, which is a potentially addictive behaviour.

In my opinion, buying lottery tickets is not so bad as some people think. Instead, it is good for society by creating new jobs and representing an important source of income for charity and sports causes. Of course, it is not a means of making money for individuals we should encourage, because the result is hardly predictable. Therefore, we should take a positive but cautious attitude towards lottery buying behavior.

So far, Google has scanned more than 10 million titles from libraries inAmerica and Europe-including half a million volumes held by the Bodleian in Oxford. The exactmethod it uses is unclear; the company does not allow outsiders to observe the process. Why is Google undertaking such a venture? Why is it even interested in all those out-of-print library books, most of which have been gathering dust on forgotten shelves for decades? The company claims its motives are essentially public-spirited. Practice 6 You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic: Some people believe that these environmental problems are too big for individuals to deal with, while others think that individuals should take some action. Discuss both views and give your opinion. You should write at least 250 words.

正确答案: 【参考范文】
Nowadays, environmental protection has become an urgent task, and who should take the responsibility or more responsibility? Some experts believe that as long as all the citizens take actions on to protect the environment, could the pollution problem be solved. On the contrary, others think that some problems are too big for citizens and the government should take the duty. Personally, the two sides can not be separated.
There are at least three things which are within individual’s reach: Firstly, developing green habits is contributing to the environment. It is a good one to conserve nonrenewable resources in daily routines. Not only should people make full use of the nonrenewable resources but also try to use some alternative ones. Secondly, it is fashionable for young people to follow the new trend called the low-carbon lifestyle. The idea of “low carbon” is to complete daily routines without discharging much waste. Lastly, people can also enhance the green awareness day by day as the society makes progress. If people have environmental-friendly values, they will protect the local surroundings without deliberate reminders.
Individuals, however, can not do everything as their capabilities are limited. Firstly, as for some huge constructions like dams or power stations, it is impossible for individuals to build or even think about them out of the restriction of funds and labors. Furthermore, individuals do not have force to stop illegal damages to the environment. Only if the legislative authorities draw up and put into practice relevant laws can citizens have rules to obey and can the destroyers be punished based on legal grounds. Lastly, citizens can only realize the importance on their own, but there is little chance to popularize these ideas to the public, so the media should make more effort by designing a theme TV program about eco-protection for the general public to have a full awareness of eco-protection.
As is mentioned above, protecting the local environment is the obligation for both individuals and the government. The government should make more efforts and build a platform on which citizens can have the chance to make some contributions.

考题 问答题Practice 3 You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic: Students at schools and universities learn far more from lessons with teachers than from other sources (such as the Internet and television). To what extent do you agree or disagree? You should write at least 250 words.正确答案:【参考范文】 Rapid development of technology provides convenience and freshness for many aspects of people’s life, including education. Nowadays, students become more reliable on computers for research and are often asked to hand in a perfect paper by schools. Others even have decided to give up the original way of learning and to obtain knowledge through online institutions. These changes in learning and teaching methords have aroused a special concern regarding the fading of teacher s’ giving lectures in classrooms. Some people observe that compared with that of an original classroom, the role of teachers is beginning to drop because computers can help students study faster. For example, in the classroom, most of students’ intellectual capacities can not be activated, and thus some would be confined to a slow advance in their studies because of others' lower capacity of understanding. However, thanks to the new study mode, pupils could progress in their acquisition of knowledge at their own pace. The presence of teachers, however, is essential for students because human interaction plays positive and significant roles which can hardly be replaced by the cold machines. Firstly, from teachers, students can gain more than mere knowledge in the textbooks. They can cultivate their interest in certain subjects and establish emotions with students and teachers. They can learn the importance of communication through working in a group and how to respect other students. Furthermore, it is necessary to have teachers in the learning process to learn students' deficiencies and help them solve their problems by repeating explanations, giving extra instructions or even suggesting a tutor. Hence, students can have a bigger chance of passing exams. To conclude, although computers and the Internet do brings convenience and speed, the role of teachers in the learning process is still very important and it will continue to be in the future because machines cannot replace human interaction.解析:暂无解析

You should write at least 150 words but no more than 200 words.正确答案:【范文】My View on the Use of E-Dictionary When it comes to learning English, nobody can do it well without the assistance of a dictionary. Confronted with the difficult task of learning English at college level, many students turn to electronic dictionaries (e-dictionaries) for help. While an ordinary, paperback English-Chinese/ Chinese-English dictionary is often big and heavy, e-dictionaries are small and light, hence quite portable and handy. They provide students with an easy access to information concerning pronunciations, spellings, meanings, translations, antonyms and synonyms whenever students come across a new word. However, with a limited storage capacity, e-dictionaries are often subjected to a low storage of good examples illustrating the usages of a word compared with its high storage of vocabulary. Meanwhile, an ordinary, paperback dictionary will turn out popular and helpful when it offers abundant examples and illustrations for a word. And a financial problem will also arise if you intend to possess an e-dictionary. The price of an ordinary, paperback dictionary is around 100 Yuan, but the price of an average e-dictionary is often over 200 Yuan. I would like to have both. I will carry an e-dictionary with me to all my English classes, and, keep an ordinary, paperback dictionary close at hand when I am learning alone.解析:暂无解析

考题 问答题Practice 5 You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic: If a product is of good quality and meets people's needs, people will buy it, Therefore, advertising is unnecessary and is no more than a type of entertainment, To what extent do you agree or disagree? You should write at least 250 words.正确答案:【参考范文】 With the popularization of media, many manufacturers take advantage of advertisement to publicize their products. Whether you like it or not, advertisements have become an indispensable part of modern entertainment. Therefore, some believe that they have more entertaining functions instead of genuine promoting objectives. As far as I am concerned, I cannot totally agree with this argument. Admittedly, as more advertisements tend to invite celebrities like movie stars and pop singers to be their image spokespersons. But the questions are: who pays the bill in advertising areas and what is the intention? The producers invest great sums of money in the advertisements with the only ultimate purpose of selling more products at a higher price. Although some advertisements have entertaining elements, the original intentions can never change. To begin with, by effective communicative means, the advertisements can attract more audience to enlarge the customer base. In other words, people get to know a product from advertisements on channels like TV or posters on buses. The second level is more important. Advertisement can leave audience with a deeper impression. With the great help of modem media, people can easily sink into a public effect. Consumers are apt to follow trends formed by ads. Last, there is possibility that some ads may contain some false information of the product in order to exaggerate the functions and cover some shortcomings. As a saying goes, “There is no reasonable consumer, but only crazy buyer tempted by advertising.” Ads easily lead to irrational shoppers. In conclusion, advertisements are a vital element in the commerce for selling products or services. But the entertaining elements should be judged with sense and reason.解析:暂无解析

At least, I suggest so. Regarding the reasons, the following example related to my own experience can prove everything. Several years ago, I was lucky to have an opportunity to go to Singapore to have a summer camp with my high middle school teachers. We have stayed there for about half a month. During that period of time, we had interviewed many high middle schools, and we exchanged our experience of teaching, learning, school management and so on. In that way, we had truly gained much valuable experience. We also paid several visits to some beautiful tourist attractions that were quite different from those of China. Lastly I had also found that Singapore is a country with severe laws for protecting pubic sanitation. It is very easy to find that the country is very clean and tidy with fresh air permeating everywhere. Till now, through spending holidays in a foreign country, we can really gain a great deal. We can get to know quite different forms of cultures and customs. We can enlarge our vision and may also make several friends from different nationalities. However, the journey abroad will cost you a large sum of money. In all, the benefits obviously outweigh its expenditure.解析:暂无解析

考题 问答题Practice 1 You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic: Multi-cultural societies, in which there is a mixture of different ethnic peoples, bring more benefits than drawbacks to a country. To what extent do you agree or disagree? You should write at least 250 words.正确答案:【参考范文】 As a popular slogan goes, The whole globe is just a meter away. With the development of technology, the entire world shrinks into a village in a few decades, which brings about more clashes among people from different races. Someone pushes the so-called solution forward that it is better to divide people into groups according to races. However, this can never solve the problem but only aggravate it. Admittedly, living in a multi-cultural community with full freedom and without any restriction is a nightmare for everyone indeed. The racial conflicts and residential differentiation would be a huge barrier for all the residents living together. However, if they can do everything cautiously by taking the cultural differences into account, living in this kind of surroundings will offer a great opportunity to enjoy much more communication worldwide in one's short lifetime, which will attract countless people to look forward to the multi-cultural life experience. Obviously, among all the benefits of multi-cultural society, the following two reasons should, at least, be specially mentioned: First, The colorful and diverse community can deepen the understanding between one people and another. In other words, if people plan to imitate others' custom or behaviour, it is better to understand it before their copying it. Second, it is a shame and inhumane for all modem citizens to discriminate anyone living in any circumstance. In fact, all the people are nothing but simply and most importantly, all creatures have the equal right to live on the earth, so it is not necessary to hold some stereotypes against others. Multi-cultural society is a remarkable stage in history, and more likely it is warfare against the Racism, which will finally succeed without any doubt. As is mentioned above, racism and multi-culture are contradictory with each other, which should be sensibly solved. As capable human beings, we may regard others’ lifestyles improper, but we should respect them no matter whether we like them or not.解析:暂无解析

You should write at least 150 words but no more than 200 words.正确答案:【范文】 At the mention of success, different people maintain various views. Some hold that wealth is the only criterion on account that without money you can’t live a decent life, and that the more money you possess, the happier you will be. Some however, regard fame as a symbol of one’s achievement, in that the social recognition is the value of each individual because people will respect you if you are in high social status. In my personal point of view, the achievement of self-value decides whether his or her life is successful. Maslow’s famous theory has pointed out that human needs are divided in to different levels. Once the lower level has been achieved, we begin to seek higher needs. Money, which brings us basic needs of life, only produces physical comfort. Social needs are higher, because respect and recognition are indispensable for us social animals. But the highest need we pursue is the self-value, which is through work or other things we do, we feel we are needed and contribute our efforts to the society. This has nothing to do with which social rank we are in. So whether one person is successful or not does not hinge on his wealth and fame, for the accomplishment of self-worth is what we should focus on.解析:暂无解析

So did my classmates. We just wanted to relax. But at our first English lesson on how to improve our study the teacher told us, “There is no end of learning. The more you learn, the more ignorant you will find yourself to be. The only way you can do is to work hard to learn more.” The teacher’s words awaken me and remind me of the ignorant few who claim to have all of the answers to man and life but know less than you or I, and who, with their hands held up high, offer everything you may have wanted to know about life itself, but when pushed and pried knowing nothing but what they are told. Now I am a postgraduate, and life has taught me too many harsh lessons. The more I learn and experience, the more I realize how little I know. Therefore, bearing in mind the motto that there is no end of learning, I keep on my studies. I do not only learn from the books, but also from experiences, as practice makes perfect.
