第1题:

(b) Calculate the taxable benefit in 2005/06 if Jan were to use the accommodation offered by his employer. You

may assume that the rules for calculating benefits are the same as in 2004/05. (3 marks)

正确答案:
(b) Benefit – accommodation
If Jan accepts the offer, he will occupy the building for a period of eight months in the tax year 2005/06 (from 6 August 2005
– 5 April 2006). The benefit will last for six months.
The taxable benefit is the higher of:
(i) The rent borne by the company                                                      = 600 x 6 = 3,600
(ii) The annual (rateable) value                                                            = 6,000 x 6/12 = 3,000
i.e. £3,600.
In addition, as the property costs in excess of £75,000, an additional benefit arises. The excess is subject to the official rate
of interest, and is calculated as follows:
(155,000 – 75,000) x 5% = 4,000 x 6/12                                         = 2,000
Total taxable benefit is £3,600 + £2,000 = £5,600.
Tutorial note: strictly speaking the additional charge does not apply if the expensive property is rented rather than owned –
therefore the above answer, whilst the most commonly given is not technically correct. One mark was awarded if the
additional benefit calculation was performed as shown above and an alternative one mark was awarded if the additional
benefit was not calculated for the correct technical reason.

Natural Gas

1 Natural gas is produced from reservoirs deep beneath the earth's surface. It is a fossil fuel(矿物燃
料),meaning that it is derived from orgaiiic material buried in the earth millions of years ago.The main corn-
ponent of natural gas is methane(甲烷).
2 The popularity and use of clean natural gas have increased dramatically over the past 50 years as
pipeline infrastructure(基础设施)has been installed to deliver it conveniently and economically to millions
of residential, commercial and industrial customers worldwide.Today, natural gas service is available in all 50
states in the U.S.,and is the leading energy choice for fueling American homes and industries.More than 65
million American homes use natural gas.In fact, natural gas is the most economical source for home energy
needs, costing one-third as much as electricity. In addition to heating homes, much of the gas used in the
United States is used as a raw material to manufacture a wide variety of products, from paint,to fibers for
clothing,to plastics for healthcare, computing and furnishings.Natural gas is also used in a significant number
of new electricity-generating power plants.
3 Natural gas is one of the safest and cleanest fuels available. It emits(发出)less pollution than other
fossil fuel sources. When natural gas is burned , it produces mostly carbon dioxide(二氧化碳)and water va-
por一the same substances emitted when humans breathe.Compared with some other fossil fuels, natural gas
emits the least amount of carbon dioxide into the air when combusted(燃烧)一making natural gas the clea-
nest burning fossil fuel of all.
4 The United States consumes about one一third of the world's natural gas output, making it the largest
gas-consuming region in the world. The U.S.Department of Energy Information Administration forecasts that
natural gas demand will grow by more than 50 percent by 2025.
5 There are huge reserves of natural gas beneath the earth's surface. The largest reserves of natural
gas can be found in Russia , West and North Africa and the Middle East. LNG(液化天然气)has been pro-
duced domestically and imported in the United States for more than four decades.Today, the leading import-
ers of LNG are Japan,Korea,France and Spain.

第10题:

Passage Three
Whenyou stretch out in the sun you can do one of the three things:you can use no suntan oil,an ordinary sun tan oil;or Bergasol.
If you don′t use any sun tan oil when you′re in the sun,you will burn surprisinglyquickly. If you use an ordinary sun tan oil,you will protectyour skin to a lesser or greater degree. How much protection depends on the"protection-factor number"on the bottle. Some oils block out so manyof the sun′s rays and you can stay in the sun all day without burning but youwon′t go very brown, either.
Bergasol will protect your skin like an ordinary sun tan oil.It also has a tan acceleratorthat speeds up the rate at which the sun activates the skin cells that producemelanin(黑色素).It is melanin that gives the skin itsbrown colour.Bergasol enables you to go brown faster,am as the days pass thedifference will become more obvious.Unfortunately, this special formulation isn′tCheap to prepare. So Bergasol is rather more expensive than ordinary sun tanoil. However, the price looks more attractive as you do.
Bergasoi? It makes you go brown faster
Protection Many people imagine that"cover-up"means you don′t get a tan.Nothing to show for yourholiday.
Not so.With"cover-up",you can get brown if you want to.The point of"cover-up"is to protect your skin from the harmful rays of the sunwhich, according to the experts, make your skinlook older.
That′s what Solex Cover-up is allabout--protection for your skin.It has a Sun Protection Factor 8,which makesit suitable for anyone.Find out how it works for you by consulting the SolexSun Chart. On sale wherever Solex is.With Solex Cover-up,you can tan asslowly as you like.As gently as you like. And with much less
chance of peeling.Your tan will lookbetter.Your skin will stay young longer.
Solex Gentle tan..,full protection

What is the most attractive feature ofSolex Cover-up?

A.It helps one get a more beautiful tan.
B.It is often on sale in supermarkets.
C.It blocks out more sun's rays thanother oils.
D.It helps one tan gradually and gently.
