正确答案:
Results of Building University Towns As education has come to be viewed as one of the bases for a nation's power, it has attracted more and more attention in the new century. One way that government tries to support education is to build university towns. In the past few years, cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, and Guangzhou have all built university towns, some even building more towns to host large numbers of universities in the area. This new arrangement naturally has led to many consequences, some being positive, some not. In my opinion, there are mainly three major results worth discussing.
Firstly, building university towns improves teaching facilities for universities. In the past, most universities occupied only a small piece of land in downtown area. The classrooms are old and small, and teaching equipment is out-dated. But after moving to university towns, all the universities certainly have a much larger campus, together with new buildings and newly-purchased equipment. Take my university for an example. Before moving to the new campus, it had a campus of only about 200 mu, and usually three to four colleges crammed in the same building. Now the new campus is as large as 900 mu, and every college has its own building. Besides, there are more computer labs and classrooms with multi-media equipment. In this sense, moving to the university towns is undoubtedly a progress for the school.
Secondly, building university towns can offer students a better study environment. We all know that students are supposed to focus their mind on study, but if the school is located in downtown areas, there may be too many things to distract them. For example, girls may spend much time window shopping, and boys may spend more time watching movies. But university towns can solve this problem. On the one hand, these towns are usually located in suburbs. It is very inconvenient to go window shopping, so students are forced to focus on study. On the other hand, universities provide students with very good study facilities, such as library, reading room, and computer lab. Many teachers find that the students are studying harder than they did in old campus.
Of course, there are some problems with building university towns, the most serious one is traffic problem. As university towns are located from 20 to 50 km away from cities, it may take about one hour to go there. Students have to spend more time and money when they go to the city, and teachers have to spend more time traveling to and from the suburban campuses. Remote location also means that schools have to spend more on traffic than in the past, and this expense may be considerably big for some universities.
All in all, although there may be inconveniences, building university towns can be very beneficial for universities and students. If there were no university towns, most schools would still stay in their narrow space, and teach students in small classrooms with worn out equipment. In that case, there cannot be much improvement for education, in its real sense.

Today, people all over the world are moving out of small villages in the country to go and live in big, noisy cities. They are moving from the peaceful hills, mountains, fields, rivers and streams of the countryside to the busy world of streets, buildings, traffic and crowds. This movement from rural areas to urban areas has been going on for over two hundred years.
In many countries, the main reason why people come to live in towns and cities is work. After one or two large factories have been built in or near a town, people come to find work, and soon an industrial area begins to grow. There is usually a residential area nearby, where the factory workers can live. The families of these workers need schools, hospitals and shops, so more people come to live in the area to provide these services and a city grows.
In every major city in the world, there is a business district where the big companies have their main offices. In the United States, this area is usually in the city centre. It is here that you can see the huge skyscraper office blocks. The people who work here often travel a long way to work each day. Many of them live in the suburbs of the city, far away from the industrial area and the city centre. Some suburbs are very pleasant, with nice houses and big gardens. There are usually parks for children to play in and large department stores where you can buy all you need.
But what is the future of the big cities? Will they continue to get bigger? Perhaps not. Some major cities have actually become smaller in the last ten years, and it is quite possible that one day we will see people moving out of the major cities and back into smaller towns and villages.

Directions: Some people think that all university students should study whatever they like. Others believe that they should only be allowed to study subjects that will be useful in the future, such as those related to science and technology. What′s your view about what subject university students should study? You are required to write a composition within 180 words, but no less than 150 words.

答案:
解析:
People have different views about what subject university students should study, whether the one they like or only the one that will be useful in the future. People who believe students should only study subjects that will be useful in the future list several reasons. First, university courses like medicine, engineering and information technology can provide more job opportunities, career progression, better salaries, and therefore an improved quality of life for students who take them. Second, those subjects play the major role in new inventions, economic growth, and the society' s greater future prosperity. As far as I am concerned, university students should be free to choose their preferred subjects. In my opinion, students can study well if the learning content caters to their interest. Besides, the creative thinking patterns behind some theoretical subjects have potential value. In this sense, more students of art, history and philosophy are needed. In conclusion, although it might seem sensible for students to focus only on the most useful subjects, I personally assert that they have the right to study whatever they like.

Practice 3 You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic: Students at schools and universities learn far more from lessons with teachers than from other sources (such as the Internet and television). To what extent do you agree or disagree? You should write at least 250 words.

正确答案: 【参考范文】
Rapid development of technology provides convenience and freshness for many aspects of people’s life, including education. Nowadays, students become more reliable on computers for research and are often asked to hand in a perfect paper by schools. Others even have decided to give up the original way of learning and to obtain knowledge through online institutions. These changes in learning and teaching methords have aroused a special concern regarding the fading of teacher s’ giving lectures in classrooms.
Some people observe that compared with that of an original classroom, the role of teachers is beginning to drop because computers can help students study faster. For example, in the classroom, most of students’ intellectual capacities can not be activated, and thus some would be confined to a slow advance in their studies because of others' lower capacity of understanding. However, thanks to the new study mode, pupils could progress in their acquisition of knowledge at their own pace.
The presence of teachers, however, is essential for students because human interaction plays positive and significant roles which can hardly be replaced by the cold machines. Firstly, from teachers, students can gain more than mere knowledge in the textbooks. They can cultivate their interest in certain subjects and establish emotions with students and teachers. They can learn the importance of communication through working in a group and how to respect other students. Furthermore, it is necessary to have teachers in the learning process to learn students' deficiencies and help them solve their problems by repeating explanations, giving extra instructions or even suggesting a tutor. Hence, students can have a bigger chance of passing exams.
To conclude, although computers and the Internet do brings convenience and speed, the role of teachers in the learning process is still very important and it will continue to be in the future because machines cannot replace human interaction.

Nowadays more young people can enjoy university education than in the past, but they are faced with another problem: job hunting. Most graduates find it hard to find a satisfactory job, and some have to stay jobless for several years. What do you think may have caused this problem? Write a composition of about 400 words to explain your point of view. The title has been provided for you.Problems in university students' job hunting In the first part of your writing you should present your thesis statement, and in the second part you should support the thesis statement with appropriate details. In the last part you should bring what you have written to a natural conclusion or a summary. Marks will be awarded for content, organization, grammar and appropriateness. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a toss of marks.

正确答案:
Problems in university students' job hunting Many years ago, most young people could not go to university because university only accepted a small amount of students. To their delight, young people now find it easier to go to university, but to their dismay, they also find it harder to find jobs. How come university students, who are intelligent, ambitious and knowledgeable, have difficulty in finding jobs? There are several reasons to account for this problem.
One important reason is that nowadays university students pursue too high a goal. Most of them dream to work in office buildings, and hold contempt for jobs in places where things are made or sold. Some care too much about some minor factors, such as salary, location or comfortableness of the working place. Because of these, students usually narrow down their selections, thus making it harder to find a proper job. For example, most students want to work in cities or in coastal areas, such as Shanghai, Beijing or Guangzhou. Although talents are badly needed in some western provinces, the graduates are unwilling to go there. This naturally makes it hard to find a job in some areas and hard to find a talent in some other areas.
Another reason is that the majors some students study in universities do not fit in with the demands of the vacant jobs. As the society is developing so quickly, university cannot catch up with it and offer courses to satisfy all requirements. Besides, there are some majors where not many graduates are needed but are admitting many students each year. When these students graduate, they may find that there are almost no vacancies that really need their knowledge. Majors like history or philosophy are examples of this type.
The last reason is that some employers raise too strict requirements on graduates. Because students stay on campus, most of them do not have time to work. But most companies just want to employ people with at least two-year working experience. This can keep many students from applying for the jobs. Some employers also just want boys, and then the girls will lose the chance of applying for the jobs.
From the above discussion, we can see that students, universities, and employers should all be responsible for the problems in the job market. To solve the problem, graduates should hold reasonable expectations, university should offer courses to meet the latest requirements of the society and flexibly adjust admission policy, and employers should raise sensible requirements on candidates. If all these three parties make joint efforts, university students will soon find that finding a job is not as hard as they expected.

Practice 8 You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic: Some people think people have benefited from modern communications technology, but other people think some people have not benefited at all. To what extent do you agree or disagree? You should write at least 250 words.

Daily communication tools make the distance between people shrink. There are various ways such as mobile phones, Facebook, Twitter and E-mail which changes our life from daily life to work style. As for the dramatic and rapid changes, people in all walks of life hold different opinions. Personally, it is a must to be tolerant of the new technological innovations.
It is undeniable that all these high-tech tools can alienate the virtual interpersonal relationship that exists between people. If we want to tell somebody something, we do not have to really see him, and we can send a short message, a E-mail, or leave one on Facebook. Regardless of the convenience, face-to-face conversations are still one of the best ways to understand each other.
High technologies provide us with more choices which can yield higher efficiency, which can be illustrated from three perspectives. Firstly, it is a useful time-saver for people greatly enjoy social life. Social network enable them to spare the trouble of heavy traffic in rush hours when they need to have contact with friends. Secondly, it is also a money-saver. Compared with the high cost of an official visit to someone or some place, chatting on-site or through telephone is much cheaper. If each company has an E-conference system, information sharing should never be a daydream in the era of information. Lastly, and most importantly, with the great help of new inventions, people may communicate with others without being limited to geographical difference. Namely, no matter where one stays, he or she can get in touch with people on the Internet at any time.
In summary, modem technologies are excellent assistants of our life and work, so it is wise to accept them and make full use of them properly.

Task II(20 marks) Directions:For this part, you are required to write a composition on The Anti-Addiction System. You should write at least 160 words and please write it on the Answer Sheet. Now in China the anti-addiction system and a “real name checking” system have been adopted in Cyber cafes to prevent players under 18 from becoming addicted to online games. What do students think about this system? What is your opinion about this?

正确答案:
The Anti-Addiction System Now in China, the adoption of the anti-addiction system and a “real name checking” system in netbars has led to a heated debate among students.
Some say that students’ self-discipline is very limited and now at least 14 percent of the urban teenage players are addicted to the Internet and some children even repeatedly disappear from home to spend their nights at local Internet cafes, and play truant from school. Therefore, they have failed quite a few school exams. In this sense, the new policy can prevent minors from developing online addiction.
Others claim that the anti-addiction system is only a means to an end and cannot remove the root of the online addiction completely and they believe the key is to guide the minors to improve their self-control and balance their work and play.
In my opinion, the latter point hits home for me because it cuts to the chase. However, education is a long process and takes time, which means before education produces effects on children, some supplementary measures should also be taken to speed up the process and the anti-addiction system is one of them.

Now Internet has almost become the symbol of information age. Some think that it is a very great invention because by it, they can do many things that were impossible before. But some view Internet with much disapproval because it distracts people's attention rather than help people do things better. What is your opinion about the influence of Internet on the modern society? In the last part you should bring what you have .written to a natural conclusion or a summary. Marks will be awarded for content, organization, grammar and appropriateness. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks.

正确答案:
The Internet and the Modern Society Recently the influence of Internet has attracted much public attention. People worry about the time wasted on it, the damage caused by virus spread on it, and most of all, some violent crimes committed due to the violent games played on it. All these concerns may be reasonable. But if we take a broader perspective, we may find that Internet has had many positive impacts on the modern society.
First of all, Internet has made the access to information more convenient. In .the past, people could get information they wanted through only limited channels, such as newspaper, radio, and television. This means that only a certain amount of people could get the information at a certain time and in a certain place. But now with the help of internet, people can get information no matter when they want. As a researcher has pointed out, information explosion means that people live in the ocean of information, and Internet has been essential to make that true.
Besides, Internet has also made communication more convenient. Sociologists agree that communication is vital to maintain harmonious human relation, but the communication was rather inconvenient in the past despite the continuous improvement of technology. Letters have been so slow as to be nicknamed snail mail; telegraph and telephone may be quicker, but they have been very costly. But now many new communication tools developed on the basis of the Internet, such as e-mail, msn and QQ, have made talking to a person extremely quick, convenient, and virtually free of charge. This will undoubtedly improve the human relation in the modern world.
The most important impact, however, is that Internet has made social interaction more convenient. Before the Internet era, various social institutes had only limited options to choose from if they wanted to reach the public, and naturally the result was usually unsatisfactory. But now in the Internet era, all these institutes can set up their own websites, which can not only provide the public with information but also collect reaction from the public. For example, the government can collect people's opinion about a certain project through the Internet, producers can promote products through Internet, and universities can clarify admission policies through Internet. The result is that Internet can help to bring about a more open, fair and interactive society.
In a word, more convenient social interaction, personal communication and access to information are the three major changes the Internet has made in the modern society. Although there do exist some problems with the Internet, these positive influences certainly are more important. What we should do is to find measures to solve the problems rather than just talk about them. Just as the proverb goes, we should not stop eating for fear of being choked.
